In the last few years, more Americans than ever are taking nutritional supplements. It is estimated that over 100 million Americans take dietary supplements on a regular basis. Why are so many Americans taking supplements? They know that they are not getting all they need from their diets, and they realize that supplements can make them feel healthier. Numerous studies have demonstrated that most Americans consume a diet inadequate in nutritional value. Comprehensive studies sponsored by the U.S. government (Hanes I and II, Ten State Nutrition Survey, USDA nationwide food consumption studies, etc.) have revealed that marginal nutrient deficiencies exist in a substantial portion of the U.S. population (approximately 50%) and that for selected nutrients in certain age groups more than 80% of study participants consume less than the recommended dietary allowance (RDA)
Recommended dietary allowances (RDA's) for vitamins and minerals have been prepared by the food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council since 1941. These guidelines were originally developed to reduce the rates of serve nutritional deficiency diseases such as scurvy, pellagra, and beriberi. These are all diseases of the 17th Century!!
A tremendous amount of scientific research indicates that the optimal level for many nutrients, especially the antioxidant nutrients, such as vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, and selenium, may be much higher then their current RDA's. The RDA's do not define optimal intake foe any individual.
There are three primary recommendations to help people design a basic nutritional supplement program:
1) Take a high quality multiple vitamin and mineral supplement.
2) Take extra antioxidants
3) Take essential fatty acids (Omega 3 and 6)
More and more research indicates that these nutrients play a major role in preventing illness.
