If we’re connected through Facebook, Linked In, Twitter, or any other social networking platform, you know that one of my passions is health and wellness. As many of you know, I used to be a competitive runner and I still keep pretty fit today with exercise programs like P90X. So in addition to exercise, I try to eat right and take care of myself. And to that end, I’ve learned a lot about the importance of both nutrition and supplementation. You’ve all heard the expression ‘You are what you eat’, right? Well that’s not entirely accurate. What’s closer to the truth is, ‘You are what you absorb’. If your body isn’t absorbing the nutrients you’re feeding it, then what good do they really do? We’ll talk about the importance of detox another day; for today we’ll stick to absorption.
Have you ever heard the term “
Isotonic” before? If you managed to make it through high school biology it should sound vaguely familiar. It’s defined as follows:
Denoting or relating to a solution having the same osmotic pressure as some other solution, esp. one in a cell or a body fluid. Put simply, if you’ve ever had an I.V. in the hospital, that’s an isotonic solution. It matches the body’s fluid pressure so it can get into the blood stream as quickly as possible to have maximum impact immediately. They don’t give you pills when they need a fast, powerful result. They give you an isotonic solution. Wouldn’t it make sense to intake vitamins and supplements in a similar fashion? Not by I.V., of course, that would be a rather unpleasant daily process. But what if you could
isotonic supplements by mouth? Guess what . . . you can.
Here’s the difference between taking an isotonic supplement and your typical pills and tablets. When you take an isotonic supplement, your body recognizes it as a naturally occurring substance. So it spends little to no time in the stomach, completely bypasses the digestive process and is absorbed at a rate of 90-95% in about 5 minutes (maximum absorption occurs on an empty stomach). Conversely, when you take a pill or tablet, your body recognizes it as a foreign object. It spends 4 or more hours in the stomach being broken down by the body’s digestive process. For many people, this causes stomach upset or, worse, reflux. We all know plenty of people that either can’t swallow pills, they get stomach upset or they simply burp them up all day, right? Plus, the average absorption rate of pills and tablets is between 2-12%. That’s it.
Doctors have an inside joke; they call pills ‘bedpan bullets’. Why? Because they come out the same way the go in. Sometimes with the writing still on them. Don’t believe me? Check this out:
Centrum is probably the best selling multivitamin in the country, if not the world. But this x-ray shows pretty clearly what happens when you swallow it. It takes a fun little two-day ride through your digestive system and then you poop it out. You can see a clearly defined pill (circled) moving through the lower intestines and finally sitting in the rectum before heading to the exit. How much nutritional value did that person get from taking that pill? Little to none. And that’s what happens with most pills and tablets.
Why? Because they’re made with binders and fillers and colors and dyes your body doesn’t recognize. It doesn’t know what to do with them, struggles to break them down, and doesn’t absorb them. And take a look at some of the things found in Centrum:
Besides having things like hydrogenated oil (a saturated fat) in it as well as talc (yuk), it has artificial colors, preservatives, chalk (calcium carbonate) and other ‘junk’ that really should not be found in something that you’re supposed to be taking for your health.
How about those kids vitamins like Flintstones that taste so great? Check this out:
More artificial colors and saturated fats, but this time we’ve got Aspartame! Raise your hand if you’re excited about feeding these to your kids. Exactly.
So what’s the bottom line? Well, if you’re serious about your health and want to improve it through proper supplementation, it needs to be delivered in an isotonic fashion. Let me put it this way: if I was your financial advisor and I told you the stocks you’ve been investing in have been providing a return of 2-12%, but I’ve got a new investment that will offer a 90-95% return. Which investment are you going to choose? Duh, right? Well this is the same concept with supplements, except the investment is in your health. And that should be worth something to you.
